چکیده
A range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been found to be released during zooplankton grazing on microalgae cultivated for commercial purposes. However, production grazing-derived VOCs from environmentally relevant species and their potential contribution oceanic emissions the atmosphere remains largely unexplored. Here, we aimed qualitatively explore suite produced due using laboratory cultures marine microalga Isochrysis galbana herbivorous heterotrophic dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina with without antibiotic treatment. The were measured a Vocus proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer, coupled segmented flow coil equilibrator. We alternative increases dimethyl sulfide by up 0.2 nmol dm−3 methanethiol 10 pmol depending presence or absence bacteria regulated Additionally, toluene xylene increased about 30 dm−3, respectively only, supporting biological source these compounds. Overall, our results highlight that beyond are grazing, prompt further quantification this in budgets process-based understanding VOC cycling surface ocean.

Preferential grazing of Oxyrrhis marina on virus-infected Emiliania huxleyi
We examined whether virus infection of Emiliania huxleyi with the lytic E. huxleyi-specific virus, EhV-86, influenced it’s palatability to the heterotrophic dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina. E. huxleyi mortality was assessed by comparing changes in the algae’s concentration between four different incubations: (1) Grazer O. marina plus an equal concentration of infected and healthy E. huxleyi prey...
متن کاملEffect of the Heterotrophic Dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis Marina and the Copepod Acartia Tonsa on Vertical Carbon Flux in and Around Thin Layers of the Phytoflagellate Isochrysis Galbana
Dynamics of material and energy flow through food webs differ when resources are allocated in patches in comparison to situations in which the same resources are distributed evenly throughout the water column. Thin layers of plankton are special cases of such resource patches. While previous studies have predominantly focused on the response of organisms to these layers, we investigated how 2 t...
متن کاملCultivation of Isochrysis galbana in Phototrophic, Heterotrophic, and Mixotrophic Conditions
This study compared the growth and biomass production of Isochrysis galbana under hetero-, mixo-, and phototrophic conditions using different organic carbon sources. The growth of I. galbana was inhibited in heterotrophy but was enhanced in mixotrophy compared to that in phototrophy. Subsequently, the influences of organic carbon and environmental factors (light and salinity) on the growth of I...
متن کاملRelease and consumption of DMSP from Emiliania huxleyi during grazing b y Oxyrrhis marina
Degradation and release to solution of intracellular dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) from Emiliania huxleyi 370 was observed during grazing by the heterotrophic dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina in 24 h bottle incubations. Between 30 and 70 % of the lost algal DMSP was metabolized by the grazers without production of dimethylsulfide (DMS) when grazer densities were 150 to 450 m l ' The rest was ...
متن کاملA Compendium of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Released By Human Cell Lines
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) offer unique insights into ongoing biochemical processes in healthy and diseased humans. Yet, their diagnostic use is hampered by the limited understanding of their biochemical or cellular origin and their frequently unclear link to the underlying diseases. Major advancements are expected from the analyses of human primary cells, cell lines and cultures of micr...
